My new past time is making magickal inks... and many of the recipes I use are not listed on here yet... but will be as time permits. I wonder, how many people who actually keep a Grimoire as they called it in olden times, utilized the power of ink? For example, a mere mortal and pestle can transform any ink into a very powerful tool...

If you crushed a fresh shell from the ocean, and add it to any ink, it would empower the ink to the properties of the ocean...

A piece of graveyard dirt, a stone from an area near a marker ground and strained after infusing the ink would empower the ink to be "grounded" in a very strong ink used for protection, summoning or banishing...

Using a piece of hair to shield yourself from a person who had harmed you in any way would give you extra protection against that person... combined with the right spell!

Infusing Feather ashes to the ink would give you very powerful intentions of communication...

The ideals are limitless... provided that you do your homework and with wisdom use them wisely...

NEVER DO MAGICK UNLESS YOU ARE PRACTICED AND PROTECTED... THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS DABBLING!!!

I live in a home built in 1810. I can hear horse hooves and carriages late at night going up and down my street... I am preserving all I can of this portion of history and all the beautiful things in it... I am blessed to have brass letterboxes, coffin dormers and coal tunnels within the house... and I just love it. I would guess that some would call it a "Harry Potter" house...lol.

It is complete with two spirit of women who once lived here and loved it, and now they live here still. I welcome their company... The floor to ceiling fireplace, the crown moldings, the deep hardwood floors once held dancing here... It is amazing when the house is quiet and the walls talk to me here...

A time when Ladies were just that, LADIES... and Gentlemen cared about what they looked like, and how they treated their women. A Genteel period of life... I only wish that the kitchen was still authentic. Sadly, it is not. The rest of the house, barring the loo is still real. The barrister that is endless, curved, and complete with the deed scroll at the base of it is just quintessential... It inspires me to go back in time and be who I really am...



The area I live in is very historical and for security reasons, I will not post here or anywhere for that matter, but I walk in the footsteps of many famous people... and feel their footprints in my day to day life. It is something that inspires me every single day...

'The Black Veil', v. 1.0 Plus Information

At long last, I have located a copy of the first version of the Black Veil (many thanks to Vyrdolak!). This was written by Father Todd back in 1999, or possibly 1998, and is mentioned in the 1998-1999 edition of vampyre Almanac. Lest important roots be forgotten (as some would prefer), I have included it below for historical purposes, for reference, and so that it can be compared to subsequent versions. In the few short years since the Black Veil was first written, its evolution reflects the evolution of the vampyre lifestyle and subculture (as well as the vampire roleplayers community) into something more than mere roleplaying. With the efforts of Todd Hoyt (a.k.a. Father Sebastian Todd) and a number of other like-minded individuals with a vision in the New York City ("Gotham") area, the Sanguinarium was formed and the Black Veil became more than a mere set of guidelines for vampire-pretenders to interact with each other.





This early version was presented to the then-forming real vampire community (which had some overlap with the vampyre lifestyle community, and still does today), but was met largely with criticism and rejection because of its rather roleplay-like concepts and language. Also, there was concerns of plagiarism. Michelle Belanger rewrote it in 2000 (version 2). Sanguinarius helped present the improved version to the vampire community as "The 13 Rules of the Community", and it was recieved much better than the first, although there were still those who rejected it.

Vampyre Etiquette - The Black Veil





The "Black Veil" is a code of vampyre etiquette developed by and for the members of the Sanguinary Society. It is based on common sense and a collected from years of experience. Many Societies and Households have their own versions of this mixture of philosophy and ethics. It is the job of a sire to teach the Black Veil to their childe as part of them becoming Calmae.



Treat others with respect and consideration at all times. Get to know them as you would in any other social situation.



It is disgraceful for an individual to represent the scene to any media organization that would exploit and take advantage of the scene. In addition exhibit any behavior which might threaten the community as a whole, such as attracting negative media exposure or the interest of fundamentalist religious groups.



Honor thy elders, it is proper bow to them or more formal greeting as one would nobility. They are to be addressed as Sire, Milord or Milady at havens and society functions.



Do not approach, make advances on or touch anyone's thralls or children without permission. If you wish to move on someone's kitra (vampyres lover / soul mate) ask permission from both members of the relationship in a polite manner.



First names and pseudonyms usually are used within the scene. Everyone's personal identity is confidential, so avoid using last (or real) names in meetings and pseudonyms in scene settings.



Bloodletting and or blood drinking is not considered proper in a haven or publicly, nor is drinking from unwilling individuals.



During Court, fledglings are to be seen and not heard.



When greeting another sanguine it is proper to employ the sanguine greeting (which varies from scene to scene). Most generally involved the one of lesser notoriety initiating an exchange of kisses on the back of each hand.



vampyres are ladies and gentlemen; the vampyre aesthetic commonly incorporates traditions past eras and the courtly elements of respect between individuals and the genders. Honor and



Chivalry are expected to be carried out as if we grew up with such traditions.



Hospitality is one of the most important things for vampyres, try and make your home or haven open to those from other cities, as long as they respect your local traditions and customs. Honor the traditions and customs of the locals of any new domain you enter, you may learn a great deal.

Homemade Invisible Ink and Glow in the Dark Message Recipes for Kids By kidsplayandcreate

Hey Kids, ever wonder how you can make your over own invisible ink or write glow in the dark messages? Look no further these easy and fun to make homemade recipes will have you writing like a secret agent in no time.



Invisible Ink with Lemon Juice 1



Materials: 1 lemon cut in half, water, spoon, small bowl, cotton swab or Q-Tip, white computer paper, lamp



Step 1: Squeeze both halves of your lemon over the bowl.



Step 2: Add 2-3 drops of water to the lemon juice and mix with your spoon.



Step 3: To write your message dip the cotton swab or Q-Tip into the mixture and write your message on the white computer paper.



Step 4: To see your message hold your paper up to the light. After a little bit your message will show up on the paper.



How does this work? The lemon juice oxidizes (combines with oxygen) and turns brown when it heats up. The light heats up the lemon juice enough for it to turn brown revealing your message!



You can also try this experiment using milk, grape juice, apple juice or vinegar.







Invisible Ink Lemon Juice 2



Materials: Lemon cut in half, bowl, cotton swab or Q-Tip, white computer paper, salt, wax crayon



Step 1: Squeeze both halves of your lemon over the bowl.



Step 2: Dip your cotton swab or Q-Tip in the lemon juice and write your message on the white computer paper.



Step 3: Before the lemon juice message dries pour some salt over the message.



Step 4: Wait about 2 minutes then wipe all the salt away.



Step 5: Color over the entire message with a wax crayon and your message will be revealed.







White Crayon Invisible Ink



Materials: white wax crayon, white computer paper, highlighter or water color paints



Step 1: Pressing hard write a message using the white wax crayon on your paper.



Step 2: Color over the entire paper with a highlighter or paint over it with water colors and your message will be revealed.







Glow in the Dark Message



Great for Halloween parties!



Materials: Petroleum Jelly or Vaseline, cotton swab or Q-Tip, blacklight, white computer paper



Step 1: Dip your cotton swab or Q-Tip in the Petroleum Jelly or Vaseline.



Step 2: Using the dipped cotton swab or Q-Tip write your message on the white computer paper. Try to make the writing as smooth as possible getting rid of any bumps.



Step 3: Turn off all the lights and turn on the blacklight, Your message will be revealed!

Invisible Ink with Lemon Juice...

Making invisible ink is a lot of fun, you can pretend you are a secret agent as you keep all your secret codes and messages hidden from others. All you need is some basic household objects and the hidden power of lemon juice.





What you'll need:



Half a lemon

Water

Spoon

Bowl

Cotton bud

White paper

Lamp or other light bulb





Instructions:



Squeeze some lemon juice into the bowl and add a few drops of water.

Mix the water and lemon juice with the spoon.

Dip the cotton bud into the mixture and write a message onto the white paper.

Wait for the juice to dry so it becomes completely invisible.

When you are ready to read your secret message or show it to someone else, heat the paper by holding it close to a light bulb.





What's happening?



Lemon juice is an organic substance that oxidizes and turns brown when heated. Diluting the lemon juice in water makes it very hard to notice when you apply it the paper, no one will be aware of its presence until it is heated and the secret message is revealed. Other substances which work in the same way include orange juice, honey, milk, onion juice, vinegar and wine. Invisible ink can also be made using chemical reactions or by viewing certain liquids under ultraviolet (UV) light.

Recipes: Dove’s Blood Ink:

Another favorite ink, for most witches, is Dove’s Blood ink. It is commonly used for spells of love, fertility, peace, friendship, etc. It is commercially available in almost every occult store, as well as from multiple sources online. Whereas it was once made with the actual blood of doves, now, it is simple enough to make your own using other ingredients and infuse it with your own power while mixing it together, which gives the ink an extra edge of being tuned to your specific needs from the moment it is made. This gives you an extra edge in your magickal workings. This recipe is very similar to the recipe for Dragon’s Blood ink, with only a few additions to change the power infusion to a positive specific based function.



Use one part powdered Dragon’s Blood resin to an equal part Gum Arabic, which helps to give the ink a better consistency. Slowly mix in alcohol a few drops at a time to dissolve the powders thoroughly into the correct liquid consistency to use with a pen or quill. After the mix is compete, you will add in a drop or two each of cinnamon, bay, and rose essential oils to direct the power of the ink. Strain it through the finest grained metal strainer that you can find, or use a bit of coffee filter to get any clumps and impurities out before using the ink. Store it in a tightly closing glass bottle to keep the alcohol from evaporating and the ink from drying out. However, with frequent use, the ink may get thicker as the alcohol evaporates while the bottle is open. If so, simply mix in sufficient drops of alcohol to get it back to the correct fluidity for ink.



Once you get used to using various bottled inks, you will want to keep a bottle of this ink available for use full time. Specialized inks can be a witch’s best friend.

I have never been drawn to making or using magical inks. Honestly, I’m pretty sure it’s because I’m a snob when it comes to my writing tools, and I like inks that are archival quality. Moreover, I don’t think I would trust a homemade ink within 50 feet of one of my precious fountain pens, and since I’m not much of a fan of dip pens…well, there’s not much of an opportunity for me to use one of these inks.



Many practitioners, however, feel differently, and they do inscribe their various spells and amulets with magical inks they’ve either made themselves or purchased from a fellow witch who can do it much, much better than they can. If you’re drawn to the practice, Roderick gives instructions for four types of ink below:



Tree Ink



Burn a stick or twig from a magical tree and use this burned end to inscribe magical writings. The power from the tree imbues your spells.



Dragon’s Blood Ink

Dragon’s blood ink is a “compelling and commanding” type of ink. It manifests your desires with force and swiftness. Steep a teaspoon of powdered dragon’s blood resin in 1/8 cup of alcohol and 1/8 cup of gum arabic. The result should be a red ink. strain any remaining pieces out before you use it.



Dove’s Blood Ink

This ink has the same power as dragon’s blood, but to a lesser degree. It has a friendlier, less urgent quality to it. Use for love and friendship charms. Make it the same way as the dragon’s blood ink, but add three drops of rose essential oil when completed.



Black Frankincense and Myrrh Ink

This ink gives the power of success and influence to any of your spells. Burn frankincense and myrrh resins over hot coals. Collect the smoke from this on an inverted spoon. On the spoon add a few drops of hot, distilled water. Do this slowly to allow time for the black from the resin smoke to blend with the water. Add a minute amount of gum arabic to this mixture to thicken.

DRAGON’S BLOOD MAGICKAL INK





Dragon’s blood ink is a very powerful magick ink imbued with the protective powers of dragons. Although dragon’s blood ink nowadays is not the same thing as in the ancient times, the dragon’s blood ink now that’s made from a red-pigmented resin harvested from assorted plants still hold their own power.



Dragon’s blood is used in magnifying the strength of spells and also any spells concerning confidence, authority, and power. Another plus side is that it can also be used to strengthen potions and concoctions.



Mix it with any other incense or herbal concoction to increase the potion’s potency. And use it for healing, banishing, and protection.



DOVE’S BLOOD MAGICKAL INK



Dove’s blood ink is best used for writing out the most lighthearted and best-intentioned spells you can think of and for application in fertility and prosperity rituals.



This magickal ink is best used for writing out love spells, wishes, and expressing gratitude and thanks. Dove’s blood ink can also be used in sealing a pact or a promise and for inscribing on talismans and amulets.



BAT’S BLOOD MAGICKAL INK





Bat’s blood ink is one magickal ink that you should use carefully. This ink has been used to write spells of misfortune, havoc, and putting hexes. But being the good witch that you are, you can use bat’s blood ink to protect yourself from hexes. Plus you can use it to undo jinxes that have found their way into your life.



Careful with using bat’s blood ink for negative purposes since that can easily backfire.



These three most popular magickal inks are available in many Wiccan supplies stores. I think it is very important for a witch to have these in his or her arsenal. For every witch should have the transcendent experience of writing down her spells and thoughts on a piece of parchment paper using a feather quill pen that’s been dipped in magickal ink.

Seeing Into Darkness... Scrying using a black mirror by Katlyn Breene

The following excerpt comes from a book-length work on scrying and magick mirrors. Katlyn, a scrying expert, also runs Mermade Magickal Arts, manufacturing black scrying mirrors in Las Vegas, Nevada.



The black scrying mirror, or magick mirror, is a powerful psychic tool. It can bring the user hidden knowledge and clairvoyant ability and can act as a portal to other planes of existence. History shows its use in many of the traditional mystery schools and oracular temples. Today the serious student of magickal arts can rediscover the ancient rites of the magick mirror, for these techniques are again coming to light.



Scrying can be defined as the mantic art of gazing into or upon a crystal or dark mirror, allowing the physical eyes to relax, thus letting the inner psychic eyes begin to open and receive desired visions or information. The use of the black mirror is one of the best methods of achieving the state of mind required for entering trance and for scrying work. It not only acts as a focal point for visualization but can become a doorway into the astral plane. It allows communication with higher realms and the subconscious and access to Akashic records. The traditional crystal ball is also a wonderful tool, but it is more difficult to scry with and is extremely expensive. The mirror is a more efficient way to begin to learn to scry and journey in other realms. However, all techniques in this article may be used with a crystal ball as well as the black scrying mirror.



Consider the reality of the Akashic records, in which all ideas, actions, influences and vibrations are stored. The practiced scryer has the ability to “read” these records and focus on this vast source of timeless knowledge with the aid of the mirror and a strongly directed imagination. Guides from the world of spirit often lead the scryer in astral travel and mental journeying through the black mirror or crystal sphere. Scrying develops one’s clairvoyant abilities and is especially helpful in strengthening the third eye.



The preparation and construction of the mirror is extremely important. The black scrying mirror must be created with the highest magickal standards and traditions. At the full moon, specially cut glass disks are cleansed and magnetized. They are then anointed with a powerful herbal fluid condenser to attract and hold energy, vital force and any charge given them. A tincture of gold and moonstone is then applied to the surface, and they are ritually blessed under the light of the full moon. They remain for a night and a day within a circle of protection. The black coating is then applied to seal in the energy, and a felt backing is put on to protect the mirror and absorb later applications of fluid condenser. The mirror stand is carved rosewood, ebony or teak.

Preparing to work with the black scrying mirror



Always keep the surface very clean using alcohol and a soft cloth.

Never use it for anything but its intended magickal purpose.

Do not let others look into its surface, except in ritual context. Keep it stored in a silk bag when not in use.

Frequently recharge the mirror with vital force and fluid condenser, as explained following.

Practice the visual exercises described following until mastered.

Keep the working area clean and free from any disturbance.

Generally, scry using the mirror at night, preferably during the full or new moon, depending on the operation. The mirror can be used at any time, but tends to work better at these points.

When indoors, light two votive candles, one on each side of the mirror. Use white or colored candles appropriate to the work: blue for healing, purple for psychic work, orange for communication, and so on. (For more suggestions on candle colors, see any standard table of correspondences, for example in Scott Cunningham’s books or The Spiral Dance).

Burn a lunar or psychic blend incense before working with the mirror.

Place the mirror on a wooden table or altar with a clean cloth beneath it and be seated on a wooden chair in front of it, or if you prefer, assume a comfortable asana on the floor with the mirror before you.

Extinguish all light sources except the candles and/or moonlight.

Allow nothing to reflect in the mirror’s surface. It should appear as a dark tunnel or window.

Before starting, always create a sacred space to work in. Cast a circle of protection or visualize the area surrounded by white light and protection from false or misleading influences – call your guides and guardians to protect the working.

Keep a journal to record your experiences.

The rite of scrying



First, clearly decide what you seek or are trying to accomplish in the working and prepare appropriately. Then prepare the work area carefully as suggested previously.



Once you are ready, close your eyes and begin to relax; feel every part of your body releasing, relieved of all tension. Visualize your circle of protection and know you are safe and in control of all that happens within it. Begin to breath rhythmically and fully; try a count of four in, hold four, release four, four in, hold four, release four and so on. Feel yourself entering a light trance surrounded by sacred space, removed from time and the material world. Silently call your guides or guardians of the work, invoking the Goddess or calling angelic presences, spirit guides, watchtowers, astral guardians or whatever you prefer. Reaffirm your desire and the purpose of the work.



Now open your physical eyes and gaze into the mirror; remain relaxed and do not hesitate to blink when necessary. Relax the focus of your eyes but remain alert. After a while, the surface of the mirror will begin to change and fade; a dark mist will appear.



Your inner eyes will now open, and the journey into the mirror begins. Remember that the inner eye sees inside the mind, through the magickal imagination. Most people when scrying do not see the images appear with the physical eyes on the mirror’s surface but see within the mirror and in the mind’s eye. The mirror acts as a focal point, a gateway within.



When you have completed your journey or work you set out to do, begin the return to your body and ordinary senses. Breath fully and deeply, and remain still until you feel you have completely returned. Now close your eyes and remember all you saw and felt during the scrying or journey. Review your entire experience mentally.



Write it all down immediately in a journal kept for this purpose.



To begin to see



This is a very important exercise to master if you are new to scrying or are having trouble receiving images. It will aid your “visual imagination,” which allows your psychic and physical eyes to see clearly together. It gives clairvoyant strength.



Sit before your mirror and begin to imagine objects on its surface, one after another. You should try to see these images clearly in the mirror with your eyes open, just as if they were there in reality. Try simple shapes or colors first. Hold onto the image of each shape, object or color one minute before dissolving it and going on to the next. For example, use a red triangle, a yellow square, a blue circle and silver crescent; see them appear in the mirror using your firm imagination. For best results, do this exercise every day for 15 minutes until it is mastered.



This exercise is well worth the effort; it gives magickal discipline and strengthens the inner eye so visions can come with clarity and ease.



Charging the mirror with light



To charge and empower the mirror with light force is a simple but powerful process. It should be done frequently, especially just before using the mirror, so as to ensure you see correct visions, connect with positive energy and do not experience interference.



First, you must imagine that white light is collecting inside your body, being channeled down from the crown chakra. The body becomes a vessel filled with light. Remember to breathe fully, deeply and rhythmically. Now stand in front of the mirror and direct the palms of your hands toward one another. Imagine that the internal light is now moving into your hands, forming a ball of condensed white light between them. See and feel this clearly in your imagination. When ready, begin to project this ball of light into the surface of the mirror, purifying and enlivening the mirror, filling it with magickal force. See the light “soak” into the mirror. This process needs to be repeated until the mirror feels “full.”



This process can also be used to give a special or programmed charge to the mirror. Follow the steps preceding and create the ball of light between your hands, then mentally project your desire into the light before projecting the light into the mirror. This technique can be used for healing works and self-improvement. You can also charge the light with a specific color or vibration – whatever can be felt or imagined can be put into the mirror to aid the magickal energy. The empowering exercise can be used for other magickal operations as well, such as charging other magickal tools and the giving of healing light to another person. All it takes is a strong desire and powerful imagination.



Locking the charge into the mirror is accomplished by willpower. When the light has been absorbed into the mirror, state in your mind and with all the faith you can muster that the charge will remain as long as you require it. To release or remove a special charge, simply reverse the procedure, pulling the light out of the mirror into the space between your hands. Then disperse the energy into the atmosphere through the imagination. Do not draw it back into the body – see it return to the universe.



Creation and use of the fluid condenser



A fluid condenser is an infusion of herbs with tinctures, essences and gold added. It serves to hold the mirror’s magickal charge and attract elemental force. The condenser can be used not only on mirrors but also on all other ritual tools you want to charge for ceremonial use. The use of certain herbs, stones and metals in small quantities attracts etheric energy of a like kind. These fluids can be made individually to represent each of the elements or to enhance a particular work. I recommend making a universal fluid condenser that will work for all purposes, having all elements represented along with tincture of gold, representing solar and God energy, and essence of moonstone, representing lunar and Goddess energy.



The fluid is applied to recharge the mirror and to draw magickal symbols upon it for use in ritual. When the mirror is not in use, it is wise to anoint its surface with the fluid before putting it away. The fluid can be cleaned off with alcohol or distilled water later.



To make the fluid, you must first gather the herbs you need. They can be fresh or dried, but the more life force they contain, the better. The list of herbs following includes some suggestions, but you need not use all the herbs to make a good condenser. Use the ones you can find of good quality.



Once gathered, the herbs are placed in a pot with distilled water or rainwater. There should be about an ounce of each herb and enough water in the pot to cover the contents completely. Bring this mixture to a boil, and then turn down the flame and let it simmer for an hour with the pot lid on. When this is done, let the mixture cool and strain it through a muslin cloth. Put the liquid back into the pot and simmer without the lid until only a quarter of the original amount is left. When this is cool, add the gold tincture, about 13 drops to each pint of liquid. Then add the essence of moonstone. If gold tincture and essence of moonstone are not available, gold chloride or gold salts can be used and whole moonstones and crystals added to the mixture as a vibrational additive. Gold tincture can also be made at home with fairly good results.



To make gold tincture, take a pure piece of gold and holding it with a pair of pliers heat it over a flame until red hot. The red-hot gold is then dunked into a container of about half a quart of distilled water or rainwater. The heat and rapid cooling causes gold molecules to remain in the liquid. This process should be repeated nine times in the same water. Be careful of the rising steam, and try not to get the hot pliers into the water!



When you have combined all the fluid condenser ingredients together in a sterilized glass container, then add an equal amount of wood or isopropyl alcohol to act as a preservative. Store the condenser in an air-tight glass container in a dark place, and it will last for years.



For a very powerful and personalized condenser, add a few drops of your own blood to the mixture. Quartz crystals can be left in the fluid while it is stored to keep it clear.



Herbs for the fluid condenser



For the water element: elder flowers, water lily, orris root, white rose, willow, cucumber seeds, jasmine

Incense for psychic work



The best incense to use when working with the mirror or any scrying device is lunar or psychic in nature, representing the sphere of Yesod. These types of blends may be purchased or created by yourself and must be burned on self-igniting charcoal disks. Here are some excellent recipes for fine-quality magickal incense to be used for the rites of scrying.



Lunar blend incense:



A base of white sandalwood powder

Orris root and myrrh in equal parts

Oil of jasmine and jasmine flowers

Oil of lotus and synthetic ambergris

A small pinch of refined camphor

Poppy and cucumber seeds

Blend together sandalwood, myrrh, and orris root, and crush them together into a powder. True refined camphor is hard to come by, but if you should have some available, add a pinch to the powdered base. Also add at this time the poppy and/or dried cucumber seeds. Put this mixture aside in an air-tight jar.



Next, blend the jasmine, ambergris and lotus oils together in equal parts. Coat the dried jasmine flowers with the blended oil and set them aside in an air-tight jar. Let these sit until the next full moon. On the evening of the full moon, mix together (in a silver or crystal bowl if possible) the oil-soaked flowers and the powder base with your hands, meditating as you mix on the beauty and wisdom of Mother Moon. Ask her to bless this incense with Her magick.



Scrying incense (psychic blend):



A base of mastic gum, myrrh, galangal powder and frankincense

Mugwort and wormwood herbs

Rose petals and lavender buds

Green cardamom pods and star anise

Bay leaves

Oils of mimosa and lotus, and dark musk

Blend together mastic, myrrh, galangal and frankincense in equal parts and grind to a powder base. Add a few cardamom and star anise seeds to the base and put aside in an air-tight jar. Now mix equal parts of ground mugwort, wormwood and bay, about half the amount used in the powder base. Coat this mixture with dark musk oil, and put it aside in a sealed jar. Mix the lavender and rose petals together, coat them with mimosa and lotus oil and put them aside in a sealed jar. Let the ingredients stand for nine days during the waxing of the moon.



Then blend all ingredients together by hand. As you mix, meditate upon your spirit guide and developing your psychic abilities. Know that when the incense is burned, your inner eyes will open and a link will be formed between you and world of spirit. (It is best to remove anise and cardamom seeds from the incense before burning; their scent will have been absorbed by the incense base.)

Making Your Magickal Inks

Magickal ink has been used in rituals by witches for many years. Many witches today, however, will rob themselves of complete involvement in a ritual by scribbling something on a piece of scrap paper with a pen they found in a desk drawer. Why do this when you can make your own ink?







Making your own ink can be as simple as going out in the woods and finding a fallen twig and charring the end of it and then using that as a writing utensil. If you are going to use this method, you will need to make a new char-pen for each ritual that you perform. You simply burn the end of the twig until it becomes charcoal (not ash) and then you let it cool and use that to write with. While you are burning the end of the twig, visualize your intent, and continue visualizing your intent while the twig cools off. Once the twig is cool, you can then use it.







You can also make liquid magickal inks , and these will require the use of a quill or a dip pen. Dip pens can usually be found at any stationary store and some office supply stores. Which ever you decide to use, you will need to practice with the quill or dip pen until you are used to the way it functions.







The easiest way to make magickal ink is by using lampblack. It is a long process, but it is well worth it in the end as you have made the ink yourself, saved yourself some money and you have added your own personal power to the ink while you are making it. When using lampblack as the method for making your ink all you need is a candle of appropriate color (white if for general purposes, or if you do not have the proper color candle), a metal spoon, a small piece of card stock or cardboard to scrape the spoon, a small bowl, gum arabic and some distilled water. You may also need something to hold the spoon with if it starts to get hot.







Light the candle, and hold the bottom side of the spoon in the flame until the bottom of spoon is covered with soot. This typically takes about 30-60 seconds depending on the size of the spoon, size of the flame, and how close you hold the spoon to the flame. Once the bottom of the spoon is covered in soot, hold the spoon over the bowl and use the card stock or cardboard to scrape the soot into the bowl. Be careful not to breathe too heavily, as this stuff is almost weightless and will happily fly everywhere if you let it. Also, be sure to do this somewhere where it will not get on your carpet, as it will stain fabric. Repeat this process about sixty times, which will take you anywhere from half an hour to an hour. While you are doing this, if you are making this ink for a specific goal, visualize that goal while you are burning the spoon, and scraping the soot into the bowl. If the spoon gets hot, use a pot holder so that you do not burn your hands. Once you are finished gathering the lampblack (soot), you will need to add, one drop at a time, some hot distilled water. Stop adding water before you think you should. Use your finger to mix the soot and water until the soot has completely dissolved. Lampblack will float on the top of the water, so it will take some effort to get it to dissolve completely. Once the lampblack is dissolved completely, and you have rich dark colored water , add some powdered gum arabic to the mix and again stir with your finger until the gum arabic has dissolved. Add enough gum arabic to make the ink have the same consistency has commercial produced ink. After you have completed the ink, you can store it in a jar and use it as needed.

HOW TO CREATE AND USE MAGICKAL INKS



Anything can be used as a tool in rites and rituals, so long as you have sufficiently cleansed, consecrated and empowered it. Making your own ink for use in your Book of Shadows, any journals, logs, dream diaries and prayer books you plan to add to throughout your lifetime as a practitioner of magick will enhance the quality of the energy that you imbue into the pages and the affect of your work.



Of course, you may not be fussed about making your own inks as there are plenty of good inks available to purchase from occult shops and online. If you are not ‘crafty’ by nature then that’s completely fine, but if you are the kind of Witch who prefers to imbue their magical tools with their essence, then why not make a selection of beautiful inks to add to your tool collection?



GET CRAFTY: WAYS TO USE YOUR HOME-MADE INKS



Your inks can be used for recording spells and their results in your Book of Shadows, writing up prayers and correspondence charts, inscribing talismans, making magical sigils, writing on specially prepared paper for petition prayers and spells, and as a scrying implement.



HOW TO MAKE BEETROOT INK



COLOUR RESULT: REDDISH-PINK INK



Boil a couple of beetroots then either juice them using a juicer or mash then up and strain through muslin or a fine sieve ( if using a sieve you may have to strain more than once to get any fibres out).

While the juice is warm (if it’’s cooled just reheat in a microwave or on a stove) add in a little gum arabic powder, stirring until this juice has thickened slightly.

HOW TO MAKE BLACKBERRY INK



COLOUR RESULT: DEEP PURPLE INK



Pick your blackberries locally when they’’re in season

Mash the berries and strain through muslin or sieve as in the method for beetroot ink.

Pour in sterilised bottles or jars.

HOW TO MAKE BLACK INK, KNOWN AS LAMPBLACK INK



COLOUR RESULT: DEEP BLACK INK



The process required for making lampblack is simple, but time consuming. To begin collect up the following:



A taper candle and holder (use a white candle for any purpose but if you are creating the ink for a specific spell, use a corresponding colour of candle)s

A metal spoon (preferably a new spoon set aside for this purpose)

A bowl

A piece of firm white card

Distilled or spring water

Gum Arabic powder

A cloth that can get dirty

A little patience!

METHOD FOR MAKING LAMPBLACK INK:



1. Cover the surface you are working on with the cloth



2. Place the candle in the holder and light the candle; place the bowl beside it atop the cloth



3. Hold the back spoon just above the flame, so it is almost touching but not quite, for 30-60 seconds. You will notice a black coating has covered the back of the spoon – this is the treasure!



4. With the card, very carefully scrape the sooty substance off of the spoon and into the bowl. Do this slowly and deep into the bowl as it has a tendency to flutter away.



5. Now, this is where your patience is needed! Repeat steps 1-4 for about an hour, until you have a wealth of sooty goodness in the bowl. If the spoon begins to get too hot to handle, either have a break to let it cool or put on a glove.



6. You’ve acquire the treasure, now it’s time to make the riches. Warm the distilled water and add drop-by-drop to the bowl of lampblack. After every 2 or 3 drops, mix the ink with a clean finger or the spoon. Stop adding water when the ink is black as obsidian. If it too watery just make some more soot and add it in.



7. Add in a small amount of gum Arabic at a time, stirring, until the mixture resembles the kind of ink you can buy in art and stationary shops.



8. Pour your Lampblack Ink into a sterilised glass jar or bottle (to sterilise; wash glass in a dishwasher or place in a hot oven for 5-10 minutes.)



9. Store in a cool, dry place away from direct sunlight and children!



Useless Fact: Gum Arabic binds the pigment of the lampblack into paper when you write or draw with our ink. It is also used on postage stamps, envelopes, shoe polish, watercolour paints, and various sweets.



HOW TO MAKE DOVE’’S BLOOD INK



COLOUR RESULT: RED INK



Magical ink’s purpose: Write with this red homemade ink to bring forth wishes.



1 part dragon’s blood

1 part gum Arabic powder

10 parts alcohol

2 drops cinnamon oil

2 drops bay oil

2 drops rose oil

METHOD FOR MAKING DOVE’’S BLOOD INK:



Mix the ingredients and add the Arabic powder last, a little at a time, until you get the consistency you require.



HOW TO MAKE DOVE’’S EYE INK



COLOUR RESULT: RED INK, AND SWEET-SMELLING TOO!



Magical ink’s purpose: Write with this ink to bring forth peace of mind and happiness.



The quantities of the following ingredients will depend on how much ink you intend to produce.



Red talc

Red carnation petals

Frankincense resin

Vanilla essence

Cardamom

Dried marjoram

METHOD FOR MAKING DOVE’’S EYE INK:



1. Grind the frankincense resin, cardamom pod(s), carnation petals and dried marjoram in a pestle and mortar



2. Stir in the red talc



3. Add enough vanilla essence to create an inky consistency



4. If you need to thicken the ink, add in a little gum arabic powder



DRAGON’S BLOOD INK – GIVES EXTRA POWER TO ANY SPELL.



COLOUR RESULT: RED INK



Magical ink’s purpose: Give extra power to any spell.



1 part dragon’’s blood

15 parts alcohol

1 part gum Arabic

And there you have it. It doesn’t matter what, if any, faith you have. It doesn’t matter if you’re of a pagan/magic persuasion, or looking for new arts and crafts ideas. Making homemade inks and oils is satisfying work in itself… and can leader to even greater work further down the line.

Some people like to write their spells or write in their BOS with special inks. These can be purchased or you can make them. (You’ll need a nib pen or something similar.)



To make a Magical ink you crush the herbs you are going to use and place them in a jar (You don’t have to use exact measurements), add red wine or Vodka to cover the herbs plus 1cm. Red Wine will help to add to the color of the ink, and some like to add coffee and tea to help give color.



Leave this for 2 weeks. You can add food coloring to make colored inks, and rose/Lavender or other floral water to make scented ink if you wish.



Of course the ‘Bat’s Blood’ etc. names are just names, the ink doesn’t contain blood at all. Having said that, some religions (like Voodoo) do use blood as ink. But from a Wiccan point of view this is wrong, as you are killing animals, which many Pagans believe is as wrong as killing a person.



You don’t have to use exact quantities, you can estimate the amounts. Use a big jar with a sealable lid. To this add 1 bottle of cheap red wine (The quality doesn’t matter for ink making). This leaves a wine smell, which you can cover up with Rose water or another floral water if you wish. But it also adds a red color, which I like.



Some people use Vodka instead of wine, so that they don’t make a reddish ink (If they want to make green or something) and it doesn’t leave a red wine smell. Add about ¼ cup of coffee grounds and about ¼ of tea leaves in to help add color. These will give a brown color and also add to the smell.



Add about 5 crushed cinnamon sticks, about ¼ cup of cloves, about 1 tablespoon of turmeric (For a yellow color), about a teaspoon of frankincense granules, about a teaspoon of dragon’s blood powder, about 1/8 cup of cracked black pepper and any other herbs you feel like adding.



Leave this for about a week, stirring occasionally. Strain it into smaller jars and add different food colors to each jar. As much as you think it needs to make a good ink. Keep this in the fridge, to help preserve it.

I came up with some recipes for magical inks and then got together with my friend to make a test batch to see if the method would work. We started with the recipe for black ink as my other recipes had more expensive ingredients. I boiled Alder bark for about 5 hours to get a very dark brown. You’d need to boil it forever for the dye from the bark to turn black. Local natives used to use this simple dye to stain their fishing nets black so the fish couldn’t see them. Once we had a concentrated dye from the bark I added it to my smaller dye pot and my friend and I added gum arabic and myrrh resins along with crushed dried spiders and lampblack.

You can make your own lampblack by collecting it from candle or oil lanterns or buy holding a spoon over a candle and scraping off the black residue (lampblack) that forms on the metal. This takes forever to accumulate enough lampblack for an ink — especially if you are making a large batch. If you’re only making enough for a small vial for yourself, then this method is viable. One way to cheat is to purchase a high quality tube of black watercolour that is purely lampblack and gum arabic — two ingredients you’re going to need anyway. You still need other bases for the colour however (like the Alder bark) or you’ll just be writing with diluted watercolours and it’s not the same as an ink nor is it as strong. I would only recommend this cheat for a black ink though.

Straining the ink

Once the ink was blended and the writing tests showed the right consistency and darkness of colour, we allowed the ink to cool and then strained it through a very fine sieve (handcrafted inks can be pretty gritty). I had to add a little more alcohol at this point to thin it as the ink thickened when cooling. Then I poured the ink in pretty wide-mouthed bottles and had a bit of fun testing it out. And voilà, lovely handmade magical ink!

Dragon's Blood ink, the key to powerful & successful Magic

They would really tell you that this is one of the most commonly used magical substances and one that cannot be easily substituted! Burned in flames, powdered in Herbal Blends, added in Magical Potions and Elixir and of course used as the most powerful Magical Ink. Yet both Dracaena's and Daemonorops' resins are labeled and sold as Dragon's blood. Some suppliers sell widely even red resins from other Plants in order to achieve better income from their sales. This is because Dracaena's resin is rather expensive, than the other plain red resins. We will soon examine the power of the Dragon's Blood Resin, which is used in both Magic and Medicine. But now it's time for the Dragon's Blood ink! There is no magical ink more famous, more powerful and more often used than the Dragon's Blood Ink!







Used to inscribe Runes, to draw Seals, to make Talismans and in every spell which requires a magical ink, Dragon's Blood ink is the first thing that pops into a wizard's and a witch' s head! It's not that difficult to make the ink, but you have to experiment a bit, trying less or more alcohol, so that you achieve the best solution of the resin.

Important Note

Recipe of Dragon's Blood ink!

You will need



1 Part of powdered true Dragon's Blood Resin (it's the Key Ingredient)

12-15 Parts of Alcohol (for the dilution of the resin)

1 Part of Arabic Gum (for making the solution more Colloidal so that the ink stays on the Pen)

few drops of essential oil of Cinnamon or Myrrh (optional)

The procedure is simple. Make all your resin a powder and add the ground Arabic Gum. Then add the alcohol just a little bit every time, till all the powder is dissolved completely. This might take some minutes. Filter through a strainer on which you have attached a piece of cloth (a clean piece of cloth of course, but a cloth you will not need again because after that you will dump it). Store the ink in a fancy Red Bottle and inscribe on it the name of your Ink. Keep on your altar ready to be used and trust me it will be used...widely! Dragon's Blood Resin and Powdered Resin Tip! Do this procedure in Waxing Moon. Dragon's Blood ink is used in most Spells that require you to write down anything! You probably have already came across this notorious ink in some Books of Shadows or Grimoires. Dragon's Blood ink is REALLY POWERFUL. Use it with caution! Use it only in Benevolent Spells! I'm sure we all wish that we could make the magickal inks that you see in Pagan-themed stores. Now you can!

The magikal inks are exceptional to use for spells, incantations, or other charms. They are designed so that when used, after the alcohol in the ink dries, the scent of the oils and other herbal ingredients is noticeable on the paper.



Because these magikal inks are made from only natural ingredients, separation may occur. This is normal. Please make sure to shake well before use.



Dragon's Blood Ink:



Color: Red

1 teaspoon Dragon's Blood resin (finely powdered)

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Steep the powdered resin in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.

Dove's Blood Ink:



Color: Red

¼ teaspoon Cinnamon oil

¼ teaspoon Bay oil

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Steep the powdered resin in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the oils and the ground Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



Good for love, romance, friendship, and peace. Add power to love spells. Thank your spiritual guides and helpers. Ignite romance and passion.



Bat's Blood Ink:



Color: Red

1 teaspoon Dragon's Blood resin (finely powdered)

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

¼ teaspoon Myrrh oil

¼ teaspoon Cinnamon oil

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Steep the powdered resin in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the oils and the ground Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



Good for domination, command, curses, and hexes. Great for summoning spirits. Good for binding spells. Also use for spells of mystery, darkness, and all things hidden.



Butterfly's Blood Ink:



Color: Golden Yellow

½ teaspoon Saffron

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

¼ teaspoon Dragon's Blood Ink

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Bring a alcohol just to a boil. Steep Saffron until the alcohol is a yellow or golden color. Strain and cool. Add ¼ teaspoon Dragon's Blood Ink and Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



Good for change, inspiration, and expression. Helpful for calling on the element of air. Magikal aid for artists, brings creativity. Aids in communication, for both the physical and spiritual realms.

Once dry on your parchment, Butterfly's Blood Ink is nearly invisible. Which makes this ink excellent for spell working that relies on the subconscious, or sigils.



Raven's Blood Ink:



Color: Copper Red

1 teaspoon iron oxide, A.K.A rust (finely powdered)

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Steep the powdered rust in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



For healing, transformation, and mystery. Good for healing spells. Excellent to use in spells bringing about transformation, or spells to ease one's mind when faced with a life transformation. Use this ink when you want to add an air of mystery to your spell workings.



Raven's Feather Ink:



Color: Dark Red

1 teaspoon iron oxide, A.K.A rust (finely powdered)

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

1 black feather (found)

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Find a black feather in the woods or other natural area. Burn the black feather, and collect the ashes.

Steep the powdered rust in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the feather ashes, and the Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



For commanding spells and spells to contact the dead. Good for summoning spirits, banishing spirits, and exorcisms. Use this ink to create your own "talking" boards for contacting spirits, or for mediums to write out their questions for the dead.



Lampblack Ink:



Color: Black

1 teaspoon Lampblack (finely powdered)

13 teaspoons clear alcohol

3 teaspoons Gum Arabic (ground)

(Makes about 3 ounces.)

Hold a silver spoon over a candle's flame. When the spoon begins to turn black, scrape off the soot. This is your lampblack. (The spoon will get hot, you may want to wrap a towel or cloth around the handle to avoid from burning your fingers. Also make sure not to burn the cloth!) It takes quite a while to get enough lampblack to make your ink. Steep the powdered lampblack in the alcohol until dissolved, then add the Gum Arabic to thicken to an "inky" texture. Store in a glass bottle, shake before use.



Lampblack ink adds extra power to any spell. Particularly useful for wisdom and knowledge spells, making this an excellent ink for writing in a witch's book of shadows. You can also charge Lampblack ink with specific intent by coordinating the color of the candle used to create the Lampblack soot.



Invisible Ink:



Color: Invisible

Lemon Juice

Write on a piece of paper with lemon juice. When you want to read what has been written, warm the paper by candle light. (Don't burn it!) The words will “magically” appear.

Once you have created your Book of Shadows, you may want to perform a blessing ritual, in order to dedicate the book to its purpose – to help you grow as a Wiccan.
